The friendship between Trieste and Graz has roots that go far back into the days of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. A strong connection was formed by the southern railway line, which linked Trieste with Vienna. Until 1918 it was common for academics from Trieste to study in Graz. The official partnership started on May 22, 1973, when mayors Spaccini (Trieste) and Scherbaum (Graz) signed the twinning agreement.
