On October 25, 1994, mayors Nikola Obuljen (Dubrovnik) and Alfred Stingl (Graz) signed the official town twinning agreement between the two cities. In the beginning - during the war in Croatia - the aim was to provide support and solidarity for the Croatian city. Since then contact between the two cities has developed into a lively cooperation. Dubrovnik is the only twin city of Graz that has also been declared UNESCO World Cultural Heritage City.
