For more than half a century this honoring has been appointed to those citizens of Graz who have performed extraordinary services to the city. The ring, which is made of14 karat gold, was introduced during the era of Mayor Dr. Eduard Speck. On July 15, 1954 conductor Dr. Karl Böhm received the very first honorary ring. Since then, 69 citizens of Graz have been awarded the jewel.
The signet ring is hand-manufactured by Gold Smiths Löschnigg, Graz’s oldest established business of the kind. It should be worn on the middle finger and is individually fit to every male or female carrier. Chased laurel leaves decorate the outside of the ring’s sides. The inside shows an engraving of the carrier’s name and the date when the ring was officially handed over. The seal at the heart of the jewel shows the crowned panther of Graz, made of white-gold, on a green chrysopras gemstone.
